Have you always wanted to create a three-dimensional background in polystyrene with a unique pattern, but you’re not sure what the right execution process is? Or maybe you’ve just purchased one of our CNC foam Cutting Machines and you’re here to gather some creative ideas? Great, this article is perfect for you!
Step 1:
Let’s start by choosing the dimensions. I decided to make my wall 4×2 meters with a thickness of 30 centimeters. However, for convenience, the project will be split into four equal parts, making the new dimensions 1x2m.
Create a rectangle to enclose the design, converting the outline into an object. Then, insert our base file (jpeg) into the vector graphics program and trace the outline. This step is crucial because it will convert the image into a vector. If you want to learn more about the differences between raster and vector files, read the article we wrote about it.
Make sure that the figure fits perfectly inside the rectangle and, above all, that there are no open curves in the whole design.
Step 2:
Make sure you have taken the measurements of the expanded polystyrene block before starting to cut and align it with the machine. Also, check that the wire temperature is calibrated according to the density of the polystyrene you’re using (if you’re still a beginner, I recommend testing on a piece of EPS similar to the one you want to use for this project before proceeding). Insert the file into the software and press play. The machine will do everything by itself.
Step 3:
Now that we have finished cutting all the necessary pieces for our wall, we can move on to assembly. You’ll need some silicone and a bit of patience. All the central hexagons should be joined together so that the gaps between the pieces are not visible.
Step 4:
Water-based acrylic paint is the best solution to use for coloring styrofoam. A soft-bristled brush or a paint roller should also be used. That said, it’s time to get creative and let your imagination run wild!
Warning: Oil-based or solvent-containing paints should be avoided (they promote styrofoam melting).
